Why Go Through the Pain

Most people are reticent to seek advice for fear of appearing incompetent. This fear, however, is misplaced. Behavioral Scientist and Harvard Professor, Alison Wood Brooks, found in her studies that individuals perceive those who seek advice as more competent than those who do not. If there is someone out there who has already learned, discovered, uncovered, found, or developed a better way, then why go through the pain of trying to learn it on your own? That just makes no sense at all. It is a simple fact that the reluctance to seek advice is the cause of a great deal of suffering. One of my favorite quotes that I use in almost all my programs is:

Smart People
Learn from
Their Mistakes.

Wise People
Learn from
Other People’s Mistakes.

But, if you are still reluctant to seek advice from others by personal interaction, then may I suggest you gather you intellect, advice, or knowledge in a much simpler and far less painful way … READ IT. There certainly is no embarrassment there. Mental capabilities depend heavily on accumulated knowledge and experience. But, gaining wisdom from the experience side is a big problem. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Learn from the mistakes of others; you can’t live long enough to make them all yourself.”

The problem I see with most adults is they quit “actively” seeking knowledge; once they get out of school, most of them quit studying. Let me give you a simple example of what I am talking about. There are 1,025,109 words in the English language (Global Language Monitor – 2015). A child of four knows about 5,000 words. A child of eight knows about 10,000 words. An average adult knows about 20,000 words. But, here is the scary statistic; a person over the age of thirty learns about 5 new words per year. Let’s see now … on average, a four-year-old learns over 1,000 words per year and a thirty-year-old learns 5. Not Good!

It is actually pretty simple to improve yourself, but many adults don’t do a single thing to do so after they get out of school. If you just read thirty minutes per day, you will read the equivalent of 24 books per year. That’s more than most people read in two decades. Human character expert, Earl Nightingale stated: “If you spend 30 minutes – every day – learning about one specific subject, you’ll become a legitimate expert in six months.” Some people might dispute the title of “expert” in just 6 months … but I will tell you this … you will know more than 95% of the people in the world if you follow this practice; now that’s impressive!

Successful people seek knowledge anyway they can. Set aside 15-30 minutes a day to make YOU better. I don’t care if you watch a video on You Tube or read, just do something that is going to improve YOU. Your only true security in life is your ability to perform. The more you know the better chance you have to be successful. If you are in management, understand the talent of each person who works for you is CRITICAL to the success of your company. Companies aren’t talented, knowledgeable and skilled … PEOPLE ARE. Put something in their hand or on their computer that they can read every day that will help to make them better. What habit do you have in place to insure that YOU are learning something every day that will help you succeed? One of the keys to success is …

It is wise to learn

from the mistakes of others –

it is even wiser to learn

from their success.

RULE #29:

You need to understand
that you can shorten
your learning curve
by reading for
KNOWLEDGE every day.
Make it part of
your daily routine
and share the habit
with others.
